Services : Arunoday Midway Home is a charitable trust that was established in 1977 for treatment and rehabilitation of people who were drug-dependent, including alcoholism. This makes the Home to be one of the first in the country to have addressed the issue of drug abuse and alcoholism. The pioneering work was done by Rev. Vijayan Pavamani who could foresee that it would become a growing menace in our society in the years to come.
The present facility exists from the year 1979 and it was officially inaugurated by the then Health Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Nani Bhattacharya. Mother Teresa also graced the occasion and was the chief guest at the function.
People who are dependent on different substances are admitted to the Home after they have completed one months' detoxification. The detoxification is done at a separate facility and the client is then brought in for treatment at the Home. The rehabilitation at Arunoday Midway Home is based on the 12-Steps Principles - often called the Psycho-Spiritual Principles - of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) AND narcotics Anonymous (NA), where the client is made to understand the disease of addiction as well as to help him to practice the program principles in his daily living. The treatment is designed in a way that enables the client to live the drug-free life by bringing about changes in his personality during the tenure of the treatment. We have a structured program of approximately four months - depending on the progress of the client - that motivates the client to live the sober life.
The program is conducted through different group and individual sessions in a community/group therapy. Group efforts have proved to be quite effective for individuals to understand and practice the spiritual principles all over the world. In fact this type of therapy has been one of the most successful worldwide and we have made further refinements and modifications to suit Indian contexts and situations over the years. However, the program follows a reasonably relaxed schedule where the client is given enough time to think through his life and the damage the disease of addiction has caused to him.
For us at Arunoday Midway Home, people are more important than their problems and the care-givers are trained to give personal attention to individuals who go through the treatment. Motivational counseling and spiritual growth are the key elements of the therapy as emphasized by our Founder-Director, Rev. Vijayan Pavamani.
